How to make a great first impression

First impressions are 55% determined by the way you dress, act and walk through the door. 38% of first impressions are determined by the quality of your voice, grammar and confidence and 7% of first impressions stem from the words you choose to say. Needless to say, first impressions can make or break a potential relationship whether you are meeting with a customer, business partner or a member of the media .

Below are five practical tips on how to make a great first impression!

  1. Get excited: When I first dive deep into a project with a new client or a member of the media, I want them to feel my eagerness to work with them. At the end of the day, I want them to feel as excited to work with me as I am to work with them. This helps establish a new layer of trust that wasn’t there prior to meeting.

  2. Practice active listening: I believe listening to your client and member of the media about their desires to tell their stories is a key action item to ensure you’re making a good impression. Active listening and giving productive feedback go to show how much you care about the client

  3. Show your support outside of the workplace: Some of my now best friends stemmed from working in PR. Give the people you work with a follow on their personal or business social handles! In my experience, I have followed my media friends on social channels, and it helped blossom our friendship. It allowed for a more personal relationship to take place which is something I cherish a lot working in this field. This will make the person on the receiving end a little more excited when they see your name at the top of their inbox, making them more inclined to reply

  4. Do your research: Show that you did your homework prior to meeting for the first time. Asking questions about past campaigns, current goals and making formal comments regarding their game plan is crucial in making a lasting impact. This will go to show that you want to step with your best foot forward.

  5. Be authentic. More than anything else, it’s important to be your true and authentic self when making connections with new people.
