Brands to Celebrate National Sandwich Day, Bring Awareness to Hunger and Homelessness

Donations from event will benefit the New Orleans Women and Children’s Shelter

New Orleans, LA (October 22, 2019) – Few things scream “New Orleans” louder than the iconic po’boy. For the fourth year in a row, Blue Plate Mayonnaise, Chisesi Brothers and Leidenheimer Baking Company are partnering to celebrate National Sandwich Day. The local brands are collectively spreading tradition and feeding the masses, one po’boy at a time by giving away sandwiches on Friday, Nov. 1. All are welcome to snag a po’boy in front of Gallier Hall at 545 St. Charles Ave. starting at 11 a.m. until sandwiches run out. Donations will be solicited for the New Orleans Women and Children’s Shelter to aid their fight in eliminating hunger and homelessness in our area.

“We are thrilled to give away a taste of New Orleans by offering free po’boys, while at the same time helping the New Orleans Women and Children’s Shelter,” said Jessica Carriere, associate marketing director for Reily Foods Company, manufacturer of the legendary Blue Plate Mayonnaise. “We are grateful for the opportunity to continue to partner with Chisesi and Leidenheimer, two of New Orleans’ best family-owned food businesses.”

Blue Plate Mayonnaise, Chisesi Brothers and Leidenheimer Baking Company have all been staples of the New Orleans culinary landscape for nearly 100 years. Celebrating National Sandwich Day with a partnership between the three companies allows the public to come together for a quintessential New Orleans delicacy. Po’boy options will include ham, turkey and roast beef in both traditional and Cajun varieties and a specialty Cajun turkey Philly po’boy with grilled onions, peppers, provolone cheese and roast beef gravy created by Parkway Bakery and Tavern’s Justin Kennedy.

There’s a suggested donation for attendees of $1 for regular po’boys and $5 for Chef Kennedy’s specialty po’boy. All proceeds will benefit the New Orleans Women and Children’s Shelter, the largest shelter for homeless women and children in the metro area. Shelter representatives will also be on site to collect donations and educate the public about its services. Blue Plate Mayonnaise plans to match proceeds raised during the National Sandwich Day event and present the money to the Shelter during Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Nov. 16-24.

“We are humbled and honored to be the nonprofit partner for this year’s National Sandwich Day celebration in New Orleans,” said Dawn Bradley-Fletcher, executive director of the New Orleans Women & Children’s Shelter. “We greatly appreciate the iconic New Orleans brands that have teamed up to make this possible, Blue Plate Mayonnaise, Chisesi Brothers and Leidenheimer Baking Company. Partnerships like this allow us to fulfill our Shelter’s mission of empowering the homeless community and giving families the support and resources they need to achieve a stable and successful lifestyle.”
