SELF Now Enrolling Educators in Specialized Development Cohorts
Whether in person or online SELF is ready to provide teachers with targeted professional development
NEW ORLEANS, LA (July 20, 2020) – The Special Education Leader Fellowship (SELF) is currently enrolling teachers for their 2020 – 2021 Specialized Development Cohorts. Targeted for special educators, interventionists and general educators, the cohorts offer comprehensive professional development in the following six areas: Support Students with Autism, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Support Students with Emotional Disturbance, Support Students with Low-Incidence, Supporting Students in Co-Taught Classrooms and Orton-Gillingham.
Each of the Specialized Development Cohorts include elements of fellow training sessions, job embedded coaching and professional learning communities. With final decisions being made regarding the new normal of our children going back to school, it is imperative that teachers are prepared to meet all needs of all students.
“As an inclusion special education teacher, I found myself struggling to convince my colleagues to design a learning environment geared towards students who are struggling with content,” said a UDL Cohort Fellow. “The trainings provided by the UDL cohort have profoundly changed the school year. The tools, resources and network of educators have supported me in designing classrooms that set every student up for success.”
SELF’s Specialized Development Cohorts are one-year fellowship programs specifically designed to aid in developing the instructional skills of teachers supporting students with exceptionalities. Offering the Cohorts to a range of educators supports SELF’s mission to improve the quality of special education programming by developing highly skilled special education leaders in schools.
“At SELF, we ensure students with exceptionalities reach their potential by putting programs, like the Specialized Development Cohorts, in place,” said SELF Executive Director Aqua Stovall. “Our goal is to help all teachers develop instructional strategies to support the academic and social-emotional needs of all students, specifically struggling learners.”
