New Innovative Affordable Housing Solution “Peoples’ Housing+” Launches in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS – Today, People’s Housing+ (PH+) launched as New Orleans’ newest housing solution to give people of color the opportunity to seek safe, affordable housing. People’s Housing+ is a merger of three New Orleans-based Community Development Corporations (CDCs): Home by Hand (HbH), Crescent City Community Land Trust (CCCLT), and Tulane Canal Neighborhood Development Corporation (TCNDC).

The organization was created to foster multi-generational wealth and fight systemic racism through affordable housing and stewardship.  The vision of PH+ is an equitable, resident led city  where every resident can afford to live, work and thrive for generations to come. Many New Orleanians have been shut out of the creation of generational wealth due to lack of access to affordable homeownership. PH+ has been created to better address that.

“Today has been a long-awaited day for our organization,” said PH+ Chief Executive Officer, Oji Alexander. “The launch of a new Black-led, community driven organization, that will bring a new approach to affordable housing development and delivery has been over a year in the making. We are taking a comprehensive approach to wealth-building that goes beyond just affordable housing. We cannot thank our sponsors, partners, and the community enough for their support in seeing this merger come to fruition. We are excited to build on the great work of the three individual organizations. We are better together.”

The launch of People’s Housing+ took place today at the site of one of the organization’s most significant development projects: a blighted firehouse owned by the city of New Orleans, that will consist of seven affordable apartment units upstairs with an early childhood development facility downstairs. Successful completion of this project will provide a road map for how city assets can be repurposed to meet two of the city’s most urgent needs, access to affordable housing and access to quality childcare.

PH+ brings together more than 40 years of collective experience in New Orleans across three organizations that have created hundreds of affordable housing units and provided thousands of clients with financial wellness and homebuyer counseling.

“It’s exciting to see how our agencies are working together with public and private entities to make a difference,” said Interim Director of the City of New Orleans Office of Community Assets and Investments, Sydney Shivers. “Each of the organizations that now comprise PH+ are long-time, trusted development partners with the City of New Orleans. Each has leveraged city resources to create affordable homeownership opportunities and community spaces that uplift and empower by meeting people where they are.”
