Louisiana’s Only NWBA Youth Wheelchair Basketball Team Expands Its Team To The Greater New Orleans Area Through A Partnership With Jefferson Parish Parks And Recreation Department
NEW ORLEANS — In collaboration with Jefferson Parish Parks and Recreation, the Cajun Wheelers, Louisiana's only National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) youth team, has expanded its adaptive wheelchair basketball program to the local community.
As a member of the Junior Division of the NWBA and the exclusive youth team in Louisiana, the Cajun Wheelers invite boys and girls ages 6-18 to join their prep and varsity teams. The team provides wheelchairs, facilities, and covers travel expenses for athletes.
“Tailored for youth with permanent lower limb disabilities, our program aims to nurture skills essential for basketball and everyday life,” said Shanna Barrow, president of Cajun Wheelers. “The goal is to empower athletes to apply these skills beyond the court, fostering friendships, courage, and a sense of freedom, joy, and independence.”
This expansion opens doors for more children ages 6-18 with lower limb disabilities to engage in competitive sports. The Cajun Wheelers will host an open recruitment event on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Ree Alario Special Needs Complex in Metairie starting at 11 a.m.
